Domestic workers, a group of salaried workers who contribute to a special Social Security regime, will be covered in the next few days by the battery of measures that the Government has launched to cushion the effects of the confinement decreed by the health alert.

As part of their special regime, domestic workers do not collect unemployment benefit. With the confinement decree, these workers cannot carry out their activity and therefore the dismissal due to force majeure would leave them without benefits . The novelty is that those who become unemployed due to the coronavirus crisis will receive financial aid . With the measure, domestic workers will have access to 70% of the salary they received until the moment of the suspension of employment.

The group of domestic workers is made up of about 600,000 people, more than 90% of them women . Its duration has an initial planned period of one month, adjusted to the decreed prolongation of the state of alarm and confinement. With the official figures collected by Social Security but it is no secret that the black work rates in this activity have been growing in recent years and that measures such as the increases in the Minimum Interprofessional Salary (SMI) in 2019 and 2020 have increased the departure of female workers from Social Security records. As they are not officially registered, these people cannot be fired and will not be entitled to the subsidy.
