The injunction came from the Supreme Court. The outgoing president of the Israeli parliament is to organize the election of his successor on Wednesday. Yuli Edelstein, of Likoud, the party of Benjamin Netanyahu, tried to push back the deadline: candidate for his succession, he should be put in the minority by a disparate but united opposition.

From our correspondent in Jerusalem,

In its judgment, the Supreme Court was very severe against the outgoing President of the Parliament accusing Yuli Edelstein of " undermining the foundations of the democratic process " because the vote had been demanded last week by a majority of deputies, explains Emmanuel Navon , professor of international relations at the University of Tel Aviv.

From the moment you have a majority, you have to respect it. It is sure that Edelstein was trying in somewhat shaky ways to extend the deadline because I think that Netanyahu did indeed say to him "wait for the moment, because we are trying to negotiate a union government with Bleu -White ". "

The intervention of the Supreme Court to compel the election of a President of the Parliament is unprecedented. For Emmanuel Navon, the longer the political crisis lasts, the more it challenges the constitutional system.

" The political fighting is really testing the institutions of Israeli democracy because we are still in an unprecedented situation with three elections in less than a year without a majority emerging from these elections. Hence indeed all these political manipulations in the Knesset, both on the Likud side and on the side of the Blue-White party. "

Finally, the President of the Parliament should submit to the injunction of the Supreme Court. But a few voices on the right called him to challenge the highest judicial body in the country.
