Mercadona, El Corte Inglés and other supermarket chains have approved new security measures against coronavirus in their supermarkets and give priority to purchasing from vulnerable groups. Almost all of them have controlled the capacity for days.

All the chains approved safety and hygiene measures in their stores last Monday. Mercadona had done it on Sunday. The intention is to order the flow of people and avoid crowds in stores, especially after long lines formed at the doors of some supermarkets and riots inside last weekend.

The hysterical scenes have been repeated even before the state of alarm was decreed, with people filling carts to the top, a more typical image of pantry purchases made in the 80s than now, when we buy more frequently and in less quantity.

Reinforcement in Mercadona

Mercadona, leader in market share in this country, yesterday approved some more measures, in addition to those introduced last Monday, such as monitoring the capacity. For example, it gives preference in shopping to the elderly, people with disabilities, people with reduced mobility, pregnant women, and necessary companions.

Until now it has been advised to make the purchase individually, but these groups can be accompanied. Mercadona has also cut its opening hours to the public, which will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"The stores will remain supplied, reinforcing and guaranteeing the supply of basic and basic necessities, so that our clients can make their daily purchases," they point out in the chain.

The English Court

El Corte Inglés has approved similar measures, controlling the capacity and warning by public address system and through posters of the need to respect the minimum safety distance between people.

It has also modified its opening hours to the public and all staff use masks and gloves (this is extensible to other chains as well). Lidl, Carrefour and Alcampo have supported similar initiatives. In the case of the German chain Lidl, they allow a maximum capacity of 50 people per store.
