• Coronavirus: Why won't there be a shortage in supermarkets?
  • Outbreak. Faced with the alarm in the stores, the 'super' remember: "We are not Venezuela"

The hysteria that was experienced in some supermarkets in Madrid at the beginning of the week, with people devastating stores as if the food would end forever, has been repeating itself since yesterday in other autonomous communities. The announcement of the state of alarm has caused many people to go to grocery stores to stock up on products.

These scenes of people buying more than what a normal day would do, sweeping the stores, happen despite the fact that the food stores are going to remain open during the weeks that the restrictions and mobility measures last. Bars close, yes, but not supermarkets or hypermarkets, which will continue to provide the service normally.

The crash plan will open food establishments such as greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers, bakeries, as well as pharmacies, gas stations, tobacconists, kiosks and supermarkets, among others.

The Community of Madrid recommends that citizens "take extreme measures of prevention, respecting the distance of at least one meter between people."

In fact, the food chains have been repeating all week that the supply is assured, that there will be no supply problem and there will be no lack of product in the establishments. Spain has the best distribution network in Europe, with some 840 stores for each inhabitant . The logistics network is also exemplary and the products are replenished daily.

Insured supply

In fact, this week the sector has adjusted its processes to adapt to the excessive demand that has been. In other words, if rice is replenished normally three times a week, it is now replenished daily.

All the associations in the sector, Asedas, Aces, Aecoc and Anged, have asked consumers not to make a stock purchase, not to buy more than the account just for fear because there will be no shortage problem.

Despite all this, the scenes of hysteria were repeated on Friday and Saturday in some supermarkets in the rest of the autonomous communities. Industry sources warn: if people do not calm down, it can cause a public order problem.

"After the containment measures approved in certain areas of the country and the hoarding purchases registered in recent days in some points of sale, the industry and distribution have shown their ability to continue meeting the needs of consumers in the current scenario" , they indicate from Aecoc, the association of companies of great consumption.

The hysteria was repeated yesterday in the tobacconists. The announcement of the state of alarm removed the citizens from their isolation, with the sole objective of obtaining the largest number of tobacco packages in the tobacconists, as they did days ago with toilet paper.

The queues multiplied yesterday in many tobacconists and people took what they could, or what was left, out of fear of running out of tobacco, despite the fact that the tobacconists will remain open.
