The private sector recorded 210,000 net job creations for 2019, a better vintage than 2018 (+ 1.1%) but significantly less than in 2017, according to provisional figures from INSEE published on Friday. Over the fourth quarter of the year, net job creation increased by 0.2% to 40,700 jobs, after +33,200 the previous quarter. In 2018, France had registered 163,000 net creations after 329,700 in 2017.

The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies announced in late January a 0.1% decline in GDP in the fourth quarter and economic growth which slowed slightly more than expected in 2019, to 1.2%. Excluding temporary work, salaried employment increased by 1.2% over one year (+216,300) and by 0.3% over the quarter (+48,100). Note that as in 2018, the temporary work sector is down: -0.8% for 2019 and -0.9% in the last quarter.

By sector, construction rose 3 points in 2019 (+42,200), and 0.6% in the last quarter of the year. Industrial employment was almost stable, at -0.1% in the last quarter, and + 0.3% over one year (7,900 net job creations). It is still market services that provide the largest volume of job creation: +155,000 for the year 2019, up 1.3%. In the fourth quarter, this sector registered an increase of 0.3% (+31,800).
