Manchester City secured the 96th Community Shield by beating Chelsea 2-0 (1-0). The Argentine Sergio Agüero scored in the 13th and 58th minute, the goals for the more than 90 minutes clearly superior Citizens, in which the German national team players Leroy Sané and Ilkay Gündogan were each a half used.

Both coaches had to renounce numerous championship drivers in the traditional duel champion against cup winners. While Chelsea's new coach Maurizio Sarri had to make do without N'Golo Kanté and Eden Hazard, City missed the likes of David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.

Coach Pep Guardiola instead relied on Sané and Agüero on offense. A measure that immediately prompted danger. In the 3rd minute, Sané narrowly missed, after 13 minutes Agüero uses a positional error of Chelsea's German defender Antonio Rüdiger to 1: 0. Chelsea keeper Willy Caballero had no defense on his 16-yard shot.

Gündogan for Sané

In the second half Gündogan replaced the battered Sané at City and could have almost achieved the 2: 0 in the 50th minute, but Agüero overlooked the better positioned players and set the ball from an acute angle to the outside net.

He made it better the stubborn attacker a few minutes later: A pass by Bernardo Silva recycled the 30-year-old, who played only a minor role in the disappointing Argentines at the World Cup in Russia, (58th minute).

Fifth title for City

Chelsea, whose access Jorginho - the 26-year-old came from Naples for 57 million euros - made an inconspicuous debut, did not face offensive situations offensively and lost his fifth match for the Community Shield in a row.

Manchester City won the trophy for the fifth time. At the last triumph in 2012 the opponent was also called Chelsea. Of the players used at the time, only two were left with at the 2018 encounter: double goalkeeper Agüero and substitute Vincent Kompany, who replaced him in the 80th minute.
