The players of Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 and Bayern Munich do not have to change in 2019 in terms of video evidence when they compete in the Champions League. The European Football Association (Uefa) has decided to use video referees as early as the round of 16 of the current season. Originally, the innovation was scheduled for the next season.

In addition to the Champions League games, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will also be used in the Europa League final, the Nations League finals and at the European Under-21 Championship final round next year. It is planned that the VAR will also be used in the group phase at the European Championships in 2020 and in the Europa League from 2020/2021. The World Federation Fifa had already introduced the technical support for the 2018 World Cup.

"We are ready to use the VAR ahead of schedule, which will benefit the competition and help reduce wrong decisions," said UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin. In recent years, the association was still very critical of the VAR use expressed.

Uefa benefits in its decision from the fact that the infrastructure for the video evidence already exists in the Topligen. In Spain, England, Germany, Italy, France, Portugal and the Netherlands, the stadiums are already equipped with the corresponding camera systems.

Meanwhile, the Uefa executive confirmed that the Nations League finals will take place in Portugal from 5 to 9 June. In addition, the European Women's Championship in 2021 was awarded to England and the U21 finals in the same year to Hungary and Slovenia.
