FC Bayern has a sports director again: Max Eberl, as expected, will succeed Hasan Salihamidžić.

He is scheduled to start work on March 1st.

The club announced this after a supervisory board meeting.

The 50-year-old Eberl worked successfully for Borussia Mönchengladbach for many years.

He most recently worked for RB Leipzig until the two sides parted ways in September.

Eberl has a contract in Munich until the summer of 2027.

“Max not only has decades of experience in football management, but also started playing football at FC Bayern and became a professional here,” Supervisory Board Chairman Herbert Hainer is quoted in the statement.

As an active footballer, Eberl played for Bayern in the 1990s.

The position of sports director for the Munich team has been vacant since the end of May 2023.

At that time, Bayern released CEO Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidžić.

According to dpa information, Bayern will pay a total of 4.5 million euros in transfer fee to Leipzig.

Above all, Eberl has to push ahead with the search for a coach.

The separation from Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season is a done deal.

To this end, Eberl would play a key role in initiating possible changes to the squad.

“We have to sit down at the end of the season and analyze what’s going on, why we’re not playing so well,” said Hainer before Eberl’s signing was announced.

“Is it just the coach or do we have to change something in the team too?” According to a report in the trade magazine “kicker”, the future of a total of twelve players is being discussed, and further departures cannot be ruled out.

“I spent my entire childhood and youth at FC Bayern and in Munich, so it is special for me to now return to the club where it all began in a new role,” said Eberl.

Eberl is only the third sports director in the Munich club's history after Salihamidžić and Matthias Sammer (2012 to 2016).
