FSV Mainz 05's Bundesliga game against 1. FC Union Berlin on Friday evening has been canceled due to winter weather conditions.

The German Football League (DFL) announced that the stadium operator had closed the arena in Mainz.

“The reason for this is the heavy ice formation on the lower tiers, especially in the standing area, as well as on the travel routes and the associated safety risks for spectators,” said the DFL statement.

A new date should be announced “promptly”.

According to Mainz 05, the tickets remain valid.

The onset of winter is currently causing problems in large parts of Germany.

The Union Berlin players must have a sense of déjà vu.

At the beginning of December, Berlin's away game at FC Bayern Munich could not take place.

The reason for the cancellation was the severe onset of winter in southern Germany, which also caused heavy snowfall in the greater Munich area.

The game was only canceled on the day of the match and Union was already in Munich.

The catch-up game is scheduled for January 24th (8.30 p.m., TV: Sky).

Last weekend, Mainz scored a point against VfL Wolfsburg (1-1), Union played 0-0 at SC Freiburg.

Both teams are direct competitors in the relegation battle: FSV is in 16th place, while Köpenick has three points more and is in 15th place.
