Pia Sundhage had a contract with Brazil for the Olympics this summer. But after the failure during the World Cup last summer, when there was an exodus already after the group stage, she had to leave early.

In an interview with SVT Sport in September, Sundhage admitted that she was disappointed but not surprised that she had to go.

"I hope something will come up before I retire," she said at the time, feeling that club football was close at hand.

European Championships on home soil

But it will be another assignment as a national team coach. This time for Switzerland, who are hosting Euro 2025.

"It's a fantastic experience to be able to coach the European Championships on home soil. Euro 2013 with the Swedish national team is one of my most fun and important football trips. Now I'm going to do it again!

Sundhage, who has signed a two-year contract, has previously coached top-10 national teams in the world rankings, but is now taking over a lower-ranked nation. Switzerland is 22nd.

"It's a wonderful challenge. I'm lucky. The fact that they arrange the European Championships at home was crucial, she tells SVT Sport.

"Faith Can Move Mountains"

Since Sundhage was fired from Brazil, she has spent resting and reflecting.

"I've been very disappointed with everything that's happened. Both in the result and in the way I was forced to leave Brazil. But I've had time to reflect.

What have you come up with in your reflections?

That you have to score goals, that's crystal clear. If you look at Switzerland, it's been a bit difficult with that. We're going to look at the attacking game," Sundhage said.

"And faith can move mountains.

Lilie Persson joins Sundhage as an assistant, just as she has been in Brazil and Sweden. As head coach, Sundhage has led the United States to two Olympic gold medals and one World Championship silver medal and Sweden to an Olympic silver medal.
