The first Champions League season in the club's history has ended with a defeat for Union Berlin. On the last matchday of the group stage, the Köpenick team lost 2:3 (1:1) against Real Madrid. Kevin Volland surprisingly gave Union the lead (45'+2'), a brace from Joselu turned the game around (61'/73') before Alex Kral equalised (85'). Dani Cabellos put Real back in front shortly before the end (89').

Last in Group C, Union bid farewell to international business without a win and with two points and can now concentrate on the relegation battle in the Bundesliga.

Real Madrid could not be taken away from the group win even before the game, second place is occupied by SSC Napoli, who secured their place in the round of 2 with a 0-2 (0-<>) victory in the direct duel against Sporting Braga. Braga will be allowed to continue playing in the Europa League in third place after the winter break.
