SSV Jahn Regensburg has commented on the cause of death of Agyemang Diawusie. According to the club, the player of the third-division football club died last Tuesday "of sudden cardiac death, presumably triggered by a viral infection with suspected myocarditis" at the age of only 25.
Jahn Regensburg will play its home game against SC Freiburg II in special memory of the striker, it was said. According to its own statements on Thursday, the club had "exchanged and coordinated with the closest personal and family circle of the deceased player in detail and with an open mind". The home game this Sunday (16:30 p.m.) will therefore take place as planned.
"It was and is very important to us as a club to have made this decision taking into account all emotional states and circumstances and as a result of a very intensive weighing process in coordination with all parties," said Regensburg's sporting director Achim Beierlorzer on the staging of the home game.
According to the German Football Association (DFB), a minute's silence before kick-off is planned for the upcoming Matchday 17 matches. In addition, the DFB recommends that teams wear mourning florets at the weekend.
Played for the youth club again since the summer
Diawusie's death had caused great consternation. "In this context, we as SSV Jahn would also like to thank the entire German football community for the great sympathy and for the many different words of condolences on various channels. It is a comfort to know that we – and especially Agy's family – are not alone in our grief," Beierlorzer said.
Since the summer, Diawusie has been playing for the club in whose youth department he had also been trained. As a professional, he also played for RB Leipzig, Wehen Wiesbaden, Ingolstadt, Dynamo Dresden, SpVgg Bayreuth and SV Ried in Austria. In the 3rd division, he had made twelve appearances this season.
