Striker Harry Kane scored his 18th Bundesliga goal in 12 games, in a 1-2 victory over Cologne. The Englishman’s winner came in the 20th minute of the game, and it ensured all three points went the way of the champions.
Kane moved to Munich from Tottenham back in the summer for a club-record transfer. He has become the first English player to score 18 goals in a single Bundesliga season and he is on course to break the record for the most goals in a German campaign.
Chance For Silverware for England Captain
After 19 years with Tottenham, Kane opted to leave the North London club to better his chances of silverware. Bayern is one of the contenders to prevail in Europe’s premier competition this season, as it is the +400 second-favorite in Champions League odds.
Bayern is seen as the biggest threat to the defending champions, Manchester City, who is the +200 favorite in the Champions League winner odds. Kane has scored four goals in his opening four games in Europe this season.
The new Bayern number nine has yet to win a major trophy for club or country so far in his career. When at Tottenham, his side were beaten twice in the final of the EFL Cup, while in 2019, Spurs were runner-up in the Champions League after losing to Liverpool in the final in Madrid.
Bayern Looking For 12th Straight League Championship
The German giants have dominated the Bundesliga in recent years, as they are bidding for a 12th straight league title this season. They were pushed to the final day of the campaign last season, coming out on top on goal difference, as they finished level on points with Borussia Dortmund.
Serge Gnabry and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting finished the 2022/23 campaign as Bayern’s leading scorers with 17 goals each in all competitions. After losing Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona two years ago, they were keen to add a high-profile striker to their squad during the last transfer window, and they were able to do that with Kane.
Bayern faced competition from Manchester City, Real Madrid, and PSG for the England international, but they won the race for his signature, in what was a huge boost for the club.
Leverkusen Providing a Tough Challenge to Bayern
Although Bayern have got off to a good start to the 2023/24 campaign with Kane on their team, winning 10 of their opening 12 games, they still trail Bayer Leverkusen. Xabi Alonso’s side are unbeaten, having won 11 of their opening 12 matches.
When they defeated Werder Bremen 3-0, Leverkusen equaled the best start to a Bundesliga season following 12 games. That record was held by Bayern, who achieved that fear in the 2015/16 campaign.
Bayern is set to face Leverkusen on February 10 at the BayArena, in what could be a crucial game when it comes to the title race. When the two teams faced each other earlier in the season, it finished in a 2-2 draw.
Kane will be hoping his debut season in Germany ends in success for his team, domestically, and in Europe. If that proves to be the case, he will have played his part in that glory.
