There was no doubt about the win before kick-off, let alone after five minutes of play. Could it be imagined that Les Bleus were going to win 14-0? It is true that in view of the offensive contingent of the team of France, the record of France-Azerbaijan (10-0) of 1995 was in some heads, a few hours of facing a selection gibraltarian who did not score a single goal of these Euro qualifiers.

The demonstration began in the opening moments of the game, with an own goal from Ethan Santos and a trickster move from Marcus Thuram to make it 2-0 after five minutes of play. This was followed by Jonathan Clauss' goals for his first goal for Les Bleus, Kingsley Coman twice, Youssouf Fofana, Adrien Rabiot, Ousmane Dembélé, Kylian Mbappé three times, including a gem from 40 metres and especially Warren Zaïre-Emery.

The Parisian titi, who on November 18 became the youngest player selected since 1914 thanks to his place in the starting line-up, left a taste of not enough. On the quarter of an hour of play, before his goal, making him also the youngest goalscorer in the history of Les Bleus, he was the player who had touched the ball the most.

Unfortunately for him and the history books, which this first cap could have scored more deeply, he was injured by a dangerous tackle by Ethan Santos far too high on the ankle. The latter was also shown a red card for his gesture, allowing his team to take the lead with a numerical disadvantage.

Zaire-Emery, not the only good impression

It was difficult to hand out good points as the opposition was so weak. Still, a real satisfaction is to be drawn from this evening: the two wings of the France team are well oiled. While the Hernandez-Mbappé duo on the left has been sparking for a while now, the return of Clauss to right-back, combined with a strong Kingsley Coman, is attractive.

On the other hand, there is a small downside to Marcus Thuram's discretion despite the festival. Under the watchful eyes of his father Lilian, comfortably seated in the stands of the Allianz Riviera, he scored "only" one goal. And didn't weigh too much offensively. The introduction of Olivier Giroud in his place in the 66th minute underlined the situation. Les Bleus' top scorer scored a brace and had a goal disallowed for an offside position.

Another satisfaction, which would tend to go unnoticed in this kind of match, the team of France is now guaranteed to be part of the seeding for the draws of the groups of Euro 2024. The perfect evening.
