On Tuesday, Ugo Humbert saved the honour of Les Bleus after his victory over the American Marcos Giron in the first round of the Paris Masters 1000. The Frenchman will therefore challenge world number 9 Alexander Zverev in the second round. Gaël Monfils, who will face the Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo at the end of the afternoon, will try to emulate the Lorraine left-hander.

Ugo Humbert, who beat American Marcos Giron 6-4, 6-3 in the first round on Tuesday, saved the honour of Les Bleus, who had so far been unsuccessful, at the Paris Masters 1000 and will face world No. 9 Alexander Zverev in the next round.

First Frenchman to reach the second round

The seventh Frenchman to compete since Monday, Humbert (25), French No. 2 and world No. 26, is the first to reach the second round, after the failures of hopefuls Arthur Fils and Luca Van Assche, Adrian Mannarino, Richard Gasquet despite three match points, Benjamin Bonzi and Alexandre Muller. Gaël Monfils, who will face the Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo at the end of the afternoon, will try to emulate the Lorraine left-hander.

Although he had chances to break quickly and repeatedly, Humbert only managed to break Giron's serve on his eighth chance, in the tenth game of the first set, to win 6 games to 4. He firmly kept control of the match in the second set, with an opening break to escape 3 games to 0, and won in less than an hour and a half, on a final shutout service game. Before the Paris tournament, Humbert has two quarter-finals, in Beijing and the Shanghai Masters 1000, and a semi-final in Basel, which have brought him close to his best ranking (25th in June 2021).
