• Football Juventus tell Madrid and Barça they are leaving the Super League under pressure from UEFA

December 21, 2023, 9:30 a.m. The war between UEFA and the Super League is now at its most important moment. As EL MUNDO has been able to confirm, on that Christmas morning the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) will announce its verdict on the project led by Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, something that will mean a before and after in the organization of continental football competitions.

What does the Super League need? "Let them tell us that we can create a competition," sources from the project told EL MUNDO. The Super League accuses UEFA of having built a monopoly on European football, sanctioning and denouncing any attempt to create a new competition. Since the twelve founding clubs, who still belong to the project, made the project public on April 18, 2021, the media and legal war has not stopped growing. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham seemed determined to set up a different tournament from the 2021-2022 season, but pressure from fans and threats from UEFA struck fear into the majority. Of all of them, only Madrid and Barça remain, publicly, but the CJEU's decision could change everything.

On April 20, 2021, A22 Sports Management S.L., the company behind the Super League, denounced the threats of sanction to the teams in the courts of Madrid, the precautionary measures were approved so that the project would not be started and sanctions would not be carried out and a legal battle began that has risen to the CJEU, that it must decide whether there is an abuse of position by UEFA in preventing the creation of other competitions.

"Club football is on the eve of a big change," Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22, told this newspaper. "We hope that the CJEU will end UEFA's monopoly and enforce the fundamental freedoms of the European Union in the world of football. Fans, clubs, players and football would all win in an industry that was open to competition for ideas and proposals and where clubs could govern and organise a European competition without fear of threats."

If the ruling is favorable, the Super League plans to start its competition in the 24-25 season.
