British professional cyclist Mark Cavendish has not yet ended his hunt for the sole stage record at the Tour de France. As his team Astana Qazaqstan announced, the 38-year-old top sprinter will extend his career by another year. Originally, Cavendish had wanted to end his career at the end of the 2023 season.

Astana Qazaqstan announced Cavendish's contract extension in a video on social media in which the words "it's not over yet" can be seen. Subsequently, a spokesman for the team confirmed the decision to the AFP news agency.

Cavendish's record hunt continues. The Briton had competed in the 110th Tour de France this year to become the sole record holder of the Tour of France with his 35th stage victory. Due to a heavy crash on the eighth stage, in which he broke his collarbone, this dream was shattered. The former world champion continues to share the Tour record with Belgian cycling icon Eddy Merckx.

Cavendish, who won the 2011 World Road Race World Championship title, is one of the most successful professional cyclists in history. In total, he achieved 54 stage wins in the Grand Tours, in 2011 and 2021 he won the green jersey of the rider with the best points in the Tour de France.
