The English football champion Manchester City has said goodbye to the national league cup surprisingly early. The Citizens, spoiled by success, lost 0-1 (0-0) to Newcastle United in the duel between two Champions League participants and missed out on a place in the round of sixteen.

Former Dortmund player Alexander Isak (53rd minute) scored the goal of the day against the Sky Blues. The 24-year-old Swedish centre-forward was once unable to establish himself at BVB, moved to Real Sociedad for the 2020 season and went from strength to strength. Before last season, he went to England for 70 million euros and scored 10 league goals in his first season. This season, he is in the Premier League after scoring three goals after five games.

Manchester City did not compete in the bankruptcy in the absolute best line-up. Coach Pep Guardiola spared, among other things, attacker Erling Haaland, another ex-Dortmunder. In goal was – as usual in cup competitions at City – the ex-Bielefeld Stefan Ortega.

Manchester City will compete in the Champions League on October 4 in Leipzig.

Kai Havertz and Arsenal with a narrow win

Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool FC, on the other hand, fought their way into the next round with a lot of effort. The German team manager's team won 3-1 (0-1) against Premier League relegated Leicester City. Cody Gakpo (48'), former Leipzig player Dominik Szoboszlai (70') and Diogo Jota (89') turned the game in favour of the Reds. Kasey McAteer (3rd) had put the 2016 surprise English champions in the lead.

Arsenal are also in the round of 16. The runners-up prevailed 1-0 (1-0) at league rivals FC Brentford, national player Kai Havertz was on the pitch for the entire season. Reiss Nelson (8th) secured the Gunners' place in the round of <> with an early goal.
