Germany coach Hansi Flick has lost his job nine months before the home European Championship. This was announced by the German Football Association (DFB) one day after the 1-4 (1-2) embarrassment in Wolfsburg against Japan. On Tuesday (21 p.m.; TV: ARD) in Dortmund against runners-up France, sporting director Rudi Völler, U20 coach Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner will be in charge of the team once.

With the exemption, the association provided a novelty: None of Flick's ten predecessors were thrown out. A successor for the home European Championship has not yet been determined. In addition to Flick, the two assistant coaches Marcus Sorg and Danny Röhl also have to go.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf said of the exemption: "The committees agreed that the senior men's national team needs a new impetus after the recent disappointing results," said Neuendorf. With a view to the European Championships in your own country, you need a spirit of optimism and confidence. "For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions in my tenure so far. Because I appreciate Hansi Flick and his assistant coaches as football experts and people. However, sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. Therefore, the decision was inevitable.«

The defeat to Japan was the third in a row. The last time this happened was 38 years ago. Of the past 17 international matches, the four-time world champion has won only four. After the World Cup debacle in Qatar, only one victory in six encounters was achieved.

Flick took office in August 2021 as Joachim Löw's successor and set a starting record with eight victories. On Sunday, he led the long-planned public training.
