Khachanov showed class when he took the first set against world number three Djokovic. But then the champion woke up and won three straight sets – despite solid opposition from eleventh-ranked Khachanov.

"It was a good performance in a Grand Slam. But of course, I've been saying for a couple of years now that my goal is to get back into the top ten. It's not my ultimate goal, but it's good to have it. To be honest, I'm going home with my head held high," Khachanov said at the post-match press conference.

Djokovic advanced to the semifinals of the French Open for the twelfth time, the 45th time overall in a Grand Slam. This time he will face world number one Carlos Alcaraz, this Friday.
