Valladolid Mayor Oscar Puente has been locked in a war of words with former Brazilian star Ronaldo Nazario of Real Valladolid hours after the team was relegated to Spain's second division.

Valladolid quickly returned to the second division after just one season in LaLiga, finishing 18th with 40 points at the end of the 2022-2023 season.

Puente responded to the statements of the "phenomenon" in which he accused the municipal council of negligence with the club, where he said, "None of what Ronaldo said surprised me, I was listening to him, he did not talk about the reasons that led to the team's relegation twice in 4 seasons."

"Instead he blamed everyone, the fans, the press and the mayor. I assure you that I gave the club all my love and all my effort and also spent on it from the general resources of the municipality."

Puente's term as mayor of Valladolid is due to end at the end of this month given the results of the recent election, so he said it was necessary to advise his successor.

"Ronaldo's statements about me have two meanings; the first is to distract from what is happening inside the club, and the second is to put pressure on the new mayor, meaning either you pay or wait for what I will do when I put you at the feet of the horses at a press conference," he explained.

Puente revealed in statements highlighted by the Spanish newspaper "Marca" that his municipal council provided nearly 5 million euros to support the treasury of Valladolid in the season ending 2022-2023, but he does not know where it went and what it spent.

"Ronaldo's real problem is that he doesn't know where he lives and where he works, I can't give him the pitch for 50 years and bear all the costs, I reached an agreement with him and he's just waiting to sign, we put 5 million euros but the club doesn't have a record of where that money went," he said.

Puente did not hide his annoyance with the way the club dealt with him in the team's last goalless draw against Getafe, a result that took them to the second division, where they did not allow him to sit in the VIP area.

"For the first time the mayor is not sitting in his right place in the stadium, this is an ugly way, I was cruelly insulted," he said.

Ronaldo had accused the Valladolid municipal council of negligence and failure to play its role towards the club to the fullest.

Ronaldo said in remarks highlighted by the official website of Valladolid, that "the municipal council does not pay us money in order to finance the sports city, and this money will be paid from the club's treasury."

"Puente had a very good intention to cooperate with us but after 4 years he has done absolutely nothing for Valladolid, I understand that the procedures here can be slow but only people have been with us in the last period."

"We paid from the club's treasury and invested 18 million euros to develop the stadium for the convenience of our fans," he concluded.
