For the first day of qualifying at Roland-Garros, the results among the French and the French are rather mixed. Among the six Frenchmen in the running, only two of them managed to reach the second round. On the women's side, eight French women were expected on the courts but only two won their ticket for the second round.

The first day of qualifying for Roland-Garros 2023 ended on Monday evening with a mixed record for French tennis players. In total, 14 tricolors were on the courts annexes of the Porte d'Auteuil. But only six of them clinched their ticket to the second round of this qualifying phase for the main draw. Invited by the organizers, Dan Added first showed the way to victory to his compatriots. The 24-year-old Alsatian tennis player had a great performance. The 254th player in the world defeated the German Maximilian Marterer, much higher ranked than him.

Another great performance, that of Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg (392nd) who, to everyone's surprise, easily beat the American Denis Kudla, yet 139th in the ATP, on the rather severe score of 6-4 6-3. A member of the French semi-finalist of the junior tournament two years ago, the Frenchman "had nothing to lose" and will try to pass an extra round in these qualifiers on Tuesday.

The Couacaud failure

Another Frenchman who could also have been talked about, Antoine Ghibaudo. The 725th at the ATP almost achieved the feat of this day. Without reference on the ATP circuit, the young player of 18 years managed to take the first set against the Slovakian Norbert Gombos slammed 132nd in the ATP. But the native of Rambouillet finally cracked in the next two sets and finally lost 6-7 6-3 6-1. Another crack, that of Enzo Couacaud. The tricolor lived a terrible moment. After leading 6-3 5-0, the man who managed to take a set from Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open last January collapsed. The 28-year-old Frenchman totally lost his grip and eventually lost 3-6 7-6 6-2.

Hecatomb among French women

On the side of the Blues, the very young Daphnée Mpetshi Perricard, 14 years old, could not resist the power of the Belarusian Kristina Dmitruk. The Frenchwoman, invited by the organizers for the qualifiers, lost 6-1 6-3. Emma Lene and Audrey Albie also failed to beat the odds and were eliminated in the 1st round of these qualifications.

But the feeling of this day on the women's side comes from Margaux Rouvroy. The Frenchwoman, ranked 278th in the world and wild-card winner, beat 2020 finalist Sofia Kenin (120th) 6-4, 6-3. At 22 years old, the young player plays for the first time the qualifications of a Grand Slam tournament. She will face Belarus' Iryna Shymanovich (211th) in the second round of qualifying.
