19-year-old Melchie Dumornay was awarded last year by the soccer site Goal as the world's best female teenager.

Last night, when Haiti beat Chile 2-1, she showed why.

The midfielder, who now plays for French Reims but next season will move to big club Lyon, scored both of Haiti's goals in the directly decisive playoff match against Chile.

In doing so, she secured Haiti's first historic participation in the women's World Cup, and the country's second if you count the men's participation in 1974.

- We wanted to make history and felt we had to do it for all the Haitians who supported us.

We accepted the challenge on the field.

We are really happy to qualify, says Melchie Dumornay to the newspaper Le Nouvelliste.

"Big women's soccer supporter"

She dedicated the victory to the Haitian artist Mikaben, who died during a concert in Paris in October.

- He was a big supporter of women's football, says Dumornay.

Haiti will face Denmark, England and China in this summer's World Cup.
