YMCA Kalmar Basket already had problems completing the season in 2021.

The team led Sweden's second highest league, the Superettan, when the league was paused due to the pandemic and the season was never restarted.

Now comes the next blow.

Kalmar has decided to withdraw from the top league for next season and take a step back.

The reason: The economy, lack of help from the municipality and poor communication with the basketball association.

- The guest game in SBL men's has been interesting and developing in many ways.

But also a study too similar to George Orwell's "Animal Farm" where "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others", says Jesper Birgemo who is chairman of YMCA Kalmar basketball to Kalmar's website.

The association chooses to build from the bottom up for the next season by, among other things, investing more in width, junior activities and growth in its own ranks.

- Our ambition is to give our own products the opportunity to develop through a lot of playing time.

So then games in slightly lower divisions suit our long-term strategy better, comments sports manager Jonas Sjöberg.
