A Qatari consortium led by Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad al-Thani confirmed the bid in a statement obtained by the Financial Times.

"The aim is to ensure that the club returns to its old heights, both on and off the pitch.

Above all, we will make sure that the fans are the heart of Manchester United again," he writes in the statement.

Brother of the Emir of Qatar

According to the newspaper, the bid will be about 100 percent ownership of the club.

al-Thani is the son of Qatar's former prime minister Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al-Thani.

He is also the brother of the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.

The Glazers paid 790 million

The current owners, the American Glazer family, bought Manchester United in 2005. They then reportedly paid 790 million British pounds.

What sums the Qatari bid is about is not clear from the statement.
