Elias Pettersson's teammate Brock Boeser had tied the game at 3-3 with 17 seconds left in the third period to take the game to a penalty shootout.

Extra time was goalless and thus the match went to penalties.

Pettersson sealed the penalty with an audacious drive to the right, similar to Peter Forsberg's classic penalty in the 1994 Olympic final in Lillehammer, which had both the commentators and supporters cheering.
