The 22nd edition of the World Cup began with a victory for the Ecuadorians against Qatar (2-0) at the Al Bayt stadium in Al Khor, 50 kilometers north of Doha.
Ecuadorian striker Enner Valencia netted a first-half brace to take his team top of Group A.
Qatar starts its World Cup badly at home.
The hosts were beaten 2-0 by Ecuador in a game largely dominated by the South Americans.
