Senegalese coach Aliou Cisse included the name of Bayern Munich striker, best African player and runner-up for the Golden Ball, Sadio Mane, in the list of "Teranga Lions" that will compete in the World Cup Qatar 2022, despite his injury that undermines his chances of playing.
Cisse, who renewed his contract with the national team until 2024, told reporters that he hopes that Mane's condition will improve within a few weeks, expressing that he is "optimistic" because the injury does not require surgery.
The coach added, "I preferred to keep him in the group, Sadio Mane is an important player in our team, it is important to continue to follow his injury, and hopefully in two or three weeks there will be an improvement. But we are really optimistic."
"We will give ourselves all the necessary means to be able to recover Sadio Mane," he added.
Mane's participation in the World Cup squad was in doubt since he was injured in the right fibula in the twenty-first minute during his Bavarian team's victory over Werder Bremen (6-1) on Tuesday.
Immediately, the Senegal international felt pain and grabbed his knee, then lay on the grass.
After the intervention of the Bavarian doctors, Mane tried to complete the game, but he quickly indicated to his coach Julian Nagelsmann that he could not continue, to be replaced by the German international Leroy Sane.
Thus, Mane will miss Bayern Munich's next match against Schalke 04 on Saturday in the German League.
It is noteworthy that Mane was part of the Senegal squad that won the African Nations Cup early this year for the first time in history.
