Last night's MLS final was a match that few of the spectators at Banc of California Stadium will forget.

After Philadelphia defender Jack Elliott equalized in the 85th minute, the match went to extra time.

The goalkeeper was carried out on a stretcher

And that extension was of the more dramatic kind.

In the eleventh minute of the second quarter of extra time, LA's Canadian national team goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau was sent off after he rushed out and hijacked the free Philadelphia attacker Cory Burke outside the penalty area.

But Crépeau wasn't just sent off - he was also carried out on a stretcher with what appeared to be a broken leg - which is understood to mean he'll miss the upcoming World Championships in Qatar.

- I am completely devastated for him, says John McCarthy, who had to jump in instead, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Bale took the match to penalties

Just eight minutes later, in the fourth overtime, McCarthy (who had played just one game earlier this year) had to pick the ball out of the net as Jack Elliott scored his second goal of the day and looked to take the title to Philadelphia.

But two minutes later, LA's Gareth Bale headed in the equalizer - after reaching higher than just Ellitt in an aerial duel.

"Like a Halloween movie"

And in the ensuing shootout, new substitute McCarthy saved two penalties, and Los Angeles FC could celebrate the club's first MLS title.

- It was like a Halloween movie, and then we finished with a Hollywood movie, says LA striker Carlos Vela, who in 2017 was the first player to sign for the then newly started club.
