The individual match of the National Student Championship, which decides the "student yokozuna" sumo wrestler, was held in Tokyo.

This tournament, which began in 1919, celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, and on the 5th, a tournament-style individual match was held at the Kokugikan in Ryogoku, Tokyo.

Athletes who win individual competitions are called ``student yokozuna,'' and are qualified to make their debut as ``makushita tsukedashi,'' when entering the grand sumo tournament.

The final was a meeting between the fourth-year students of Nippon Sport Science University, and Choijirsuren from Mongolia faced off against Taiki Nakamura, the student yokozuna and captain three years ago.

Choi Jilsuren stepped sharply in the tachiai, and after that, he stepped forward without backing down and continued to attack, pushing out and winning, becoming the first student yokozuna.

Looking back, Choi Jilsuren said, "I'm happy because it's my first national title, including at university and high school. I'm glad I was able to win just in time, following the coach's instructions with only winning in mind."

Regarding the fact that the final was a match with his teammate, he said, "This number one was the number one I had dreamed of. When I played against him before, I couldn't do anything and lost, but I was given another chance and I was able to seize it. It was good,' he said.
