The Swedish swimmers had not been allowed to step onto the podium during the two opening days of the World Cup (in short course) in Berlin.

There had been four Swedish fourth places - two of which went to Louise Hansson in the 50 and 100 meter backstroke.

But in the EC gold event 100 meter butterfly, the perfect hit came.

“Very surprised”

The 25-year-old Helsingborg swimmer recorded a world best of 55.33 and won by a landslide, 1.62 seconds ahead of Dutch runner-up Maaike de Waard.

- I am very surprised that I could do 55.3 here, she said afterwards according to the swimming site Swimswam.

It is Hansson's third best time in her career and she will be a golden hope in the short track World Cup in Australia in December.

Her personal best is 55.10.

Louise Hansson is the only Swede to swim all three events in the World Cup.

Little sister second

Louise Hansson's sister Sophie Hansson, barely two years younger, took Sweden's second podium place by finishing second in the 50 meter breaststroke.

Sophie Hansson recorded 29.84 and had no chance against Lithuanian star Ruta Meilutyte, who with 28.60 was only four hundredths above Jamaican swimmer Alia Atkinson's four-year-old world record.

The two Helsingborg sisters train together at Loughborough University in England.

Michelle Coleman made a comeback after a ten-month break from competition and managed her goal, to go under the international qualification limit for the short track World Championships in both the 50 and 100 meter freestyle.

Coleman finished last in the 100-meter freestyle final in 52.89.

Siobhan Haughey, Hong Kong, won in 51.59.

Sarah Sjöström is not participating in the World Cup as she took a short break during the autumn.

The World Cup continues in Toronto next weekend.
