Simona Halep, former world number 1, has been provisionally suspended for doping, the Tennis Integrity Agency announced in a statement on Friday.

The Romanian player tested positive for Roxadustat, a prohibited substance, during the last US Open in August.

Warned, she requested the analysis of the B sample, which confirmed the result obtained during the analysis of the A sample, specifies the ITIA.

Roxadustat is a medicine that stimulates the production of red blood cells and is used in the treatment of patients with kidney problems.

Halep, 31, lost in the first round at the American Grand Slam tournament, beaten by Ukrainian Daria Snigur.

She is no longer authorized "to participate in or attend sanctioned tennis events organized by the sport's governing bodies".
