Toivonen returned home to Swedish football and Malmö FF in the summer of 2020 after a decade at European clubs: PSV Eindhoven, Rennes, Sunderland and Toulouse.

The last foreign adventure before the return to the Allsvenskan was in Australian Melbourne Victory.

But now it's really over.

- I feel that the time is now.

The motivation is there, but the body doesn't quite keep up.

I got a serious injury, fought through it and didn't have high expectations, but it almost went better than expected when I came back.

Then there was hope that it would continue in the autumn, but the results and playing time have been too bad from both the team and me, says Toivonen in a comment on MFF's website and continues:

- When I came home to Malmö, I said that it would be fun to win a SM gold.

Now I'm sitting here a few years later and have won two, a cup gold and a Europa League group game.

All in all, there is nothing to complain about.

In addition to two stays in Malmö FF, Toivonen has represented two more Swedish clubs: Örgryte and parent club Degerfors.

In the national team, there were 64 games and 14 goals.
