Toronto was just 19 seconds away from tying the game and may already have overtime on its mind in the team's NHL debut this season.

A failed clearance from the Maple Leafs allowed Montreal's Nick Suzuki to get the puck and play it to Josh Anderson, who scored the decisive 4–3 goal.

It significantly dampened William Nylander's cup of joy, as he had equalized only a minute and a half earlier after a lightning-quick counterattack.

Nylander was also credited with an assist on the 2–1 goal midway through the game.

In the American capital, Linus Ullmark saved 33 of 35 shots when his Boston visited Washington.

The Czech Republic's David Pastrnak accounted for a goal and three assists for Boston, while Hampus Lindholm had to punctuate the game with a goal in the open box and make the result 5–2.

Washington's Erik Gustafsson was credited with an assist.
