The 205 centimeters and 113 kilos Zdeno Chara began his NHL career as a 20-year-old in the New York Islanders.

Since then, there have been 24 seasons in the world's best league and a lockout season in Färjestad for the Czech.

"After 25 seasons of professional hockey, 1,680 NHL regular season games, 200 Stanley Cup playoff games and hundreds of international games, I am proud to announce my retirement from the NHL," writes Chara on Instagram.

Chara, who spent 14 seasons in Boston and won a Stanley Cup title with the team in 2011, has now signed a one-day contract with the Bruins to end his career with the club where he spent most of his career.

“The team has meant so much to me and my family.

There are so many people who have contributed to my success, I look forward to saying goodbye properly," he writes on Instagram.

Half an hour later, the next retirement announcement also came when PK Subban, who spent 13 NHL seasons in Montreal, Nashville and New Jersey, announced on Twitter that it was over.

"I remember dreaming of playing in the NHL and winning the Stanley Cup with bruises, broken legs and tears of joy.

To this day I still dream about it.

But this chapter is closing and after 13 years in the NHL, I have decided to retire," writes Subban.
