Lewis Hamilton started fourth and was given victory after Mercedes went for an alternative strategy with one less pit stop than the competition.

With twelve laps to go he was in the lead.

The problem?

He was still running on medium tires while the competition at the top had taken the opportunity to switch to the faster, softer tires in connection with the safety car being out on track after Valtteri Botta's engine gave up.

Then Hamilton was unable to defend himself.

First the Red Bull's Max Verstappen blew past, then team mate George Russell - and then it broke for the Briton.

- I can't believe how you ruined everything for me, I can't even describe how angry I am, Hamilton shouted over the team radio.

Team principal Toto Wolff responded:

- I'm sorry it didn't work out, but we just did what we discussed in the office this morning.

Hamilton then calmed down and thanked his mechanics for a job well done.

Verstappen eventually won the race in front of 100,000 fanatical home fans.

- It had been an incredible weekend and I am very happy.

Because it wasn't easy today, says Verstappen.

The win was his fourth in a row and he now leads the championship by over 100 points with seven races to go.

- The gap is really big now.

We must try to maximize the results as best we can and then we will see what will be possible in the end, says Leclerc, who is second.
