When Jelena Rybakina took home Wimbledon in July, it was her first career grand slam title.

In the US Open, the sights were thus set on a new grand slam success.

But after 90 minutes of play in New York, that dream was over for this time.

Rybakina lost the first set 4–6 against 21-year-old Clara Burel and in the second set the numbers were repeated.

4–6, 4–6 means that Rybakina has to pack her bags and Burel sails on in the tournament.

Earlier in the day, Polish world number one Iga Swiatek easily won against Italian Jasmine Paolini 6–3, 6–0.

- I played stable, but I needed to take it to a new level.

I did that in the second set and I'm proud of that, says Swiatek according to AP.

In the next round, Swiatek will face American Sloane Stephens, who won the US Open in 2017.
