After a 33-year hiatus, the new Tour de France Women is off to a good start.

The 144 runners set off this Sunday at the start of the afternoon, under the watchful eye of race director Marion Rousse.

At the end of this 81.6 km long first stage on a circuit around the Tuileries gardens and on the Champs-Elysées, it was the Dutch Lorena Wiebes who won in the sprint, ahead of Marianne Vos and Lotte Kopecky.

The French Gladys Verhulst animated the end of the race, with a solitary breakaway not far from going to the end.

But it was caught just over 2 km from the finish.

Wiebes then proved to be the most powerful to win at the top of the Champs.

The Dutchwoman has won the right to put on the first yellow jersey of this Tour of renewal.

On Monday, the runners will set off for the 2nd stage, 136 km between Meaux and Provins.

Eight stages are scheduled until next Sunday, when the finish will be judged at the top of the Super Planche des belles Filles.
