European Championship and World Cup medalist Tommy Macias suddenly stops judo.

He announced the decision on Tuesday night, on Instagram, and referred to a "controversy" between him and the union.

For SVT Sport, Macias explains that he did not feel fairly treated.

This is partly because the 29-year-old is seeking more financial support, as well as more freedom at the private level - where he studies.

- The union sets unreasonable conditions.

I basically have judo as a hobby.

I have to be able to support the family and I can not do that with judo, he says.

"In good shape"

Macias continues:

- They want me to be a full-time professional, but they do not give me a professional salary.

He says the decision feels final.

- I will probably not make a comeback on the world tour.

Maybe at the Swedish Championships in the future.

It's a shame, because I feel in good shape and have good development potential.

But I and the union do not share the same vision about my career.

National team manager: "Limited resources"

Robert Eriksson, national team manager at the association, does not really agree with the criticism.

- He has his picture of it all, he has to stand for it.

From our side, he has our full support.

We have offered him what we have.

We have limited resources and no opportunity to pay salaries in that way.

He also has great freedom over his training.

Eriksson is disappointed with Macia's decision.

- It is of course sad that Tommy now chooses to end his elite career as he certainly could have achieved good results for a few more years.

Macias won European Championship gold in 2019 and World Cup silver in 2021.
