• The president of the Paca region sees himself being offered "the Southern Alps" for the Winter Olympics of 2034 or 2038.

  • In 2009, Nice had already been a candidate for the 2018 edition but was ultimately not selected by the French National Olympic and Sports Committee.

From Beijing, it will go to Milan-Cortina in 2026. But then?

For 2030, the flame of the Winter Olympics should travel to North America or Japan.

And, after that, the president of the Paca region sees himself being offered "the Southern Alps" for 2034. Renaud Muselier announced it on January 20: he intends to put together a file for this deadline.

Or, failing that, for the 2038 edition.

With what “epicenter”?

The elected official indicated that he had not yet determined “the breakdown” of his project.

If the contours of this possible candidacy are still unclear, it will at least be able to use the (aborted) experience of Nice in 2009. The French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) preferred Annecy to represent France as as applicant city for the organization of the 2018 Olympic Games, finally organized in PyeongChang in South Korea.

The capital of the Riviera had notably fished on its "technical note".

“Between sea and mountain”

But what arguments had she made at the time?

In its presentation files, found by

20 Minutes

, the community evoked its positioning "between sea and mountains" with the third international airport in France and summits accessible in one hour from Nice (which it was finally reproached for).

It also highlighted "tracks to international standards" and "Isola 2000, the snowiest resort in France" in 2007 and 2008. It also did not hesitate to play comparisons by opposing "the 600,000 m3 of hill reservoirs" for the artificial snowmaking of its eleven stations against "against 250,000 m3 in Turin".

"The Nice Côte d'Azur application is probably among those whose impact on the environment will be the most limited, since nearly 2/3 of the infrastructures already exist or are planned", also wrote the project managers.

Nice then thought of rehabilitating its ice rink and was counting on its “Grand Stade” project (the Allianz Riviera inaugurated in 2013) for the opening and closing ceremonies.

“The most glamorous Games in history”

And all this with the support of French stars of high-level sport.

"There is everything here to make these Winter Olympics an extraordinary event that will look like no other," dreamed in particular the figure skating champion Surya Bonaly, a native of Nice.

Stéphane Diagana also imagined “the most original and undoubtedly the most glamorous Winter Games in history”.

For their part, the local skiers Marion Bertrand, Nastasia Noens and Margot Bailet also praised "the perfect organization [...]", with "the sun in addition", of the "2008 French championships" then disputed in Auron and Isola 2000.

But that was not enough for the CNOSF evaluation commission.

If the latter welcomed certain facilities, "especially in the ice pole" of the destination, transport between the Olympic village and mountain resorts as well as the low capacity for accommodation at altitude proved to be problematic.

Since then, investments have been continuously made.

And the president of the Nice metropolitan area Christian Estrosi has again presented a 45 million euro plan for the renovation and construction of infrastructure at Isola 2000. An increase in the supply of beds is also in the cards.

What to start dreaming of being able to welcome the Olympic flame?

Answer in several years.
