Manchester United player Mason Greenwood remained in police custody on Tuesday, as investigators began questioning him on suspicion of sexual assault and death threats against his girlfriend Harriet Robson.

The 20-year-old attacker was initially arrested on Sunday on suspicion of rape and assault on his girlfriend, after police said they had "learned of pictures and videos on social media posted by a woman talking about incidents of physical violence".

Police were given until Wednesday to continue detaining Greenwood, who has not been charged and is now being questioned about other allegations.

Greater Manchester Police said: "Following the investigations to date, he has been arrested again on suspicion of sexual assault and death threat."

Greenwood, who has scored six goals this season, has a contract with United until 2025, but the club distanced itself from him on Sunday.

Electronic Arts said Greenwood had been removed from FIFA 22.

Meanwhile, sportswear company Nike has expressed concern about the allegations of abuse, and has officially announced the suspension of the player's sponsorship deal.

"We have suspended our relationship with Greenwood," Nike said in a statement. "We are deeply concerned about the troubling allegations and will continue to monitor the situation closely."

And according to the Daily Mail, the main Manchester United shirt company indicated that it was "watching developments closely", with another partner of the club refusing to post a picture of Greenwood on their products.

On Sunday, Greenwood's ex-girlfriend posted videos and photos on the social networking site "Instagram" showing blood on her face and other parts of her body, in addition to being physically assaulted, claiming that the Manchester United player caused these injuries.

And the England international - who earns 75,000 pounds per week ($ 100,000) - was suspended by “Al Mano” until further notice.

The incident caused great anger in the English street in sympathy for Harriet Robson, which prompted Manchester United to issue an official statement confirming that Greenwood "will not return to training or play matches until further notice."

Frustrated fans launched an attack on Greenwood and asked the club to return the money paid for his shirts.

The Manchester United stars also stopped following their teammate on social media, after he was arrested on allegations of rape and assault.

Among those stars who have stopped following Greenwood on Instagram are David de Gea, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Fred and Jesse Lingard.

There was no comment from Greenwood or his representatives.
