Liverpool abort the Palace uprising and reduce the difference with Manchester City

Liverpool had to withstand an enthusiastic uprising in the second half of Crystal Palace before winning 3-1 on Sunday and reducing the gap with Manchester City, leaders of the English Premier League, to nine points.

Virgil van Dijk gave the visitors an early lead with a powerful corner kick, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain added a second goal in the 32nd minute, as he controlled a superb cross pass from Andy Robertson before putting the ball into the net.

Palace reduced the difference ten minutes after the second half when Jeffrey Schlub passed to Jean-Philippe Mateta between the Liverpool defenders, and the latter sent the ball to Odson Edouard to score in the empty goal.

Palace pressed for an equaliser, but Fabinho scored a late penalty kick to give Liverpool the victory, which raised their tally to 48 points, nine behind City, who were satisfied with a 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday.

Palace is 13th and has 24 points.
