Not since Christine O'Neil in 1978 has there been an Australian winner on the women's side at the Australian Open.

Maybe it's time this year?

World setter Ashleigh Barty from Queensland is in any case on to the quarterfinals after defeating American Amanda Anisimova in straight sets (6-4, 6-3).

- The last two years have been extraordinarily tough for everyone around the world, but we tennis players have been lucky enough to be able to continue playing.

Having the fans back in the stands gives so much to tennis, she said afterwards.

"There are no secrets"

The Japanese Naomi Osaka, who is the reigning champion and has won the tournament two of the last three years, was knocked out on Friday against Anisimova.

Barty is now up against the surprise Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals.

Pegula in turn defeated fifth-seeded Greek Maria Sakkari 7-6, 6-3 after one hour and 35 minutes.

Barty and Pegula have previously trained together and know each other well.

- So there are no secrets, it's just to come here and fight.

The last time a home jump won on the men's side was in 1976 through Mark Edmondson, but Pat Cash played double finals in 1987 against Stefan Edberg and in 1988 against Mats Wilander.

Lleyton Hewitt fell to Marat Safin in 2005.
