Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller celebrated his 400th game in the German Football League by scoring one goal and creating another to crush the defending champions Wolfsburg 4-0 on Friday and enter the winter break with a nine-point lead at the top.

Top scorer Robert Lewandowski also broke the record for the number of goals scored in the league in one calendar year, three minutes before the end, after he scored his 43rd goal in 2021, surpassing Gerd Muller's record of 42 goals in 1972.

Muller opened the scoring after rebounding into the net in the seventh minute, after the goalkeeper blocked Serge Gnabry's shot to make his way.

Then he created a clever goal for his colleague, Dayo Obamecano, to head the second goal in the 57th minute, before Leroy Sani hit a superb ball two minutes later to kill the match.

Lewandowski had hoped to end the year in high spirits after Lionel Messi snatched the Ballon d'Or award for the best player in the world from him, but he hit the crossbar in the 66th minute, and then the goalkeeper denied him a real chance.

But he did not waste the opportunity from close range in the 87th minute, to swallow Wolfsburg, who seemed helpless or strong, for the fourth defeat in a row in the league and the seventh in a row in all competitions.

Wolfsburg fell to 12th, three points ahead of the relegation avoidance zone.

Bayern, seeking to win their tenth consecutive league title, have 43 points, while Borussia Dortmund, the second with 34 points, will visit Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

The German league will stop for three weeks and will resume its activities on January 7.
