On the women's side, Denmark was a major nation in handball between 1996 and 2004 when the country, among other things, became Olympic champion three times in a row.

Now, however, it is 17 years since the women's national team last won a championship title.

In the semifinal against France, it looked for a long time that the Danes would have the chance to settle for the World Cup title on Sunday, but that did not happen.

After a match that smelled like a Danish victory in the beginning, France managed to catch up and the match was only decided in the last minute, when the French goalkeeper Cleopatre Darleux stopped the Danish edge shot that could have meant 23-23 and extra time.

- I really had the feeling that we would be in the final.

We played a fantastic tournament and deserved it.

I can not be proud right now, says Line Haugsted after the match.

France, who beat Sweden in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, is thus on to the finals on Sunday.

There awaits either Norway or Spain, who settle for the second final place in tonight's second semifinal, which starts at 20.30.

The loser meets Denmark in the bronze match.
