Sunday's rival meeting in the World Cup qualifiers between the football giants Brazil and Argentina in São Paulo was interrupted after just a few minutes after representatives of Brazil's health authority Anvisa entered the field.

The reason was that four Argentine players, three of them in the starting eleven, with their base in England must have lied when entering Brazil that they had not spent time in England in the last two weeks, according to Anvisa.

The health authority then demanded that the players be immediately quarantined.

When the trio was then present from the start, Anvisa stopped the match.

Brazilian police announced on Monday that they have started an investigation into the incident.

They write in a statement that the suspected crime is that the players have given false information to the authorities.

The Argentine national team returned to Buenos Aires late on Sunday after police informed the players that they had to leave Brazil.

The suspected quartet was questioned by police before leaving the country.

Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association, has denied that the national team players did anything wrong.

- It is not possible to talk about a lie because there are health rules that all South American tournaments follow.

The health authorities in each country have approved a set of rules that we have followed to the letter, he said after the match.
