The women's marathon in Tokyo was a battle between two Kenyan shoes.

Peres Jepchirchir and Brigid Kosgei settled for the gold medal.

With a few kilometers left, Jepchirchir made a jerk and pulled away.

Jepchirchir was able to finish first in the competition in the time 2.27.20, new season best.

With that time, she was 16 seconds ahead of Kosgei who came second.

In third place came, a little unexpectedly, the American Molly Seidel, 26 seconds behind the winner.

Wikström impressed

The only Swedish participant in the competition, Carolina Wikström, did a very good race. Wikström did a smart race where she started slowly. But in the second half she increased the pace and picked up many places. She finished in 22nd place in the time 2.33.20. She became eight among the European runners.
