The numbers are surprising, as they are not the case for the Czech Republic.

The Czechs do not prefer to play against any other major football nation than against the Dutch.

Of the 11 duels so far, the Czech Republic won five, only three went to the Netherlands.

They are actually the clear favorite in the round of 16 this Sunday (6 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the European Football Championship as well as on ARD and MagentaTV).

Actually.

After all, it's the European Championship, and players from both nations have a long tradition in it.

In what is probably the most famous meeting of these countries, the starting position was similar.

That was forty-five years ago.

On the way to their only European Championship title, the Czechs cleared the Dutch out of the way in 1976, and four years later what was then Czechoslovakia eliminated their stronger rivals in the group stage.

All a long time ago.

The current generation of Czech footballers want to write their own story.

So far, it has been more successful than expected.

Reaching the round of 16 is considered a great success, what is still to come is icing on the Prague coffee house cake.

The biggest problem for the Czechs is their dependence on Patrik Schick.

The Bayer Leverkusen attacker scored all three goals in the preliminary round.

If Schick is signed off against England, not much happens in the Czech Republic.

"Of course it would be good if more players scored more goals," said coach Jaroslav Silhavy.

From a Czech point of view, it is a good thing that a personal goal is not absolutely necessary to advance.

A win on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes would be enough.
