Nicklas Bäckström and Carl Hagelin each scored in Washington's 5-2 victory over Pittsburgh.

Bäckis was also noted for one assist and leads the team's scoring so far this season with 24 points scored (nine goals and 15 assists).

If you count the entire league, Bäckström is currently in shared seventh place, Edmonton's Connor McDavid has scored the most points so far - 38 points.

Bäckström's 1-0 came when half of the first period was played and stood a few minutes into the third, when the goals finally began to fall in.

Washington has had a month and a half of February.

The team has lost six games and only won four.

- It feels like things are getting better and better and today we took a step in the right direction.

The last match was perhaps not our best, but I think we played 60 minutes of really good hockey tonight and we played well together as a team, says Bäckström after the match.

Wool field damaged

There were also many goals in the New Jersey-Buffalo meeting, as the former won 4-3 - but only in overtime.

Buffalo goalkeeper Linus Ullmark left the ice injured after the first period.

- Linus has a lower body injury.

We really do not know how serious it is yet, we need (X-rays) pictures and more examinations to be able to determine his health condition, says coach Ralph Krueger.

New Jersey's Jesper Bratt scored a goal and an assist and Buffalo's Rasmus Dahlin and Victor Olofsson were noted for their respective assists.

Seven goal scorers

But most goal-scoring was at the Nassau Coliseum, where the New York Islanders hosted Boston.

The Islanders won 7-2, after goals from seven different shooters.

Before the third period, the score was 2-2, but then it rattled and in just over ten minutes the Islanders pounded in five shots, the last by Oliver Wahlstrom.

- To enter the third period with equality against what is probably the league's best team, it is a good challenge for us, says Islanders Mathew Barzal.
