The inevitable happened.

The Watford club contested with FIFA the recruitment last July by Olympique de Marseille of defensive midfielder Pape Gueye, who had previously committed to the English club, the world body said Thursday.

Former Premier League resident relegated to the 2nd division after the 2019-20 season, Watford "lodged an appeal with the Dispute Resolution Chamber", responsible for contractual disputes, a FIFA spokesperson told AFP .

Formal defects

Watford's approach targets both the Marseille club and the 22-year-old player, recruited for four years by OM when he was at the end of his contract in Le Havre (Ligue 2), his training club.

“As this case is under investigation, we cannot make any additional comments,” adds FIFA.

Coming from the HAC training center, the former French international U18 and U19 has played around forty games in the last two seasons with the Norman club, including 25 in Ligue 2 during the 2019-2020 financial year interrupted by the health crisis.

At the end of April 2020, Watford had announced his signature for five years, from the following July 1.

But Gueye in the meantime broke the contract unilaterally for formal defects.
